Scary thoughts enter my mind
Hypothetical scenario:
Minority Conservative Government. First vote of confidence will be on Tough on Crime for Young Offenders. It will (obviously) be defeated. Liberals, NDP, Bloc and Greens will go to the Governor General, and form a new coalition government. We’ll get:
- Prime Minister Stephane Dion
- Minister of Finance: Bob Rae
- Minister of Defense: Jack Layton
- Minister of the Environment: Elizabeth May
If this doesn’t scare anybody I don’t know what this country is a-comin’ to.
And this is a VERY REALISTIC scenario. The Bloc, Greens and NDP have already said they’re open to it. Dion has REFUSED to rule out putting May in his cabinet, indicating he’s open to a coalition. The only way to stop this is by electing a majority Conservative government.

I don’t think May going to get elected. But what he Dion were to make her a senator, and then minister of environment, she’d be there forever.

There has been plenty of allusion to this fact:

May will never be elected, but talks are underway to get her in through the senate. No doubt.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear an announcement from Ms. May telling her members to vote red, basicially oibliterating her party.
Watch and see.

If the Bloc are part of the coalition, you’d have to give the Intergovernmental Affairs job to Mr. Duceppe.

That may be technically possible. But I don’t think Canadians would stand for it. This is a democracy, a country. Not a corporation and subject to “takeovers”.

You forgor Guceppe as Minister of National Unity.

“Forgot.”

you forgot Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Duceppe.
Iggy will be Defense and Layton Foreign Minister
Due to the fact they will be shut out in most of western Canada, all the cabinet will be from Ontario/Quebec and none from the Republic of Western Canada – say that’s a win win.

Close, but no.
The first bill is a major economic reform – tax cuts, $25 billion to banks, etc. It gets voted down, because the opposition votes down anything remotely right wing.
They can’t form a coalition – unless, of course, Dion agrees to “Prime Minister Layton.” Other than that, the NDP won’t work with the Liberals.
We have another election, only this time the Liberals are broke, the NDP borrowed everything they can get for this election, and the Conservatives have a plan that’s much better than ‘Elect us and we’ll make a plan in 30 days!”

Look to the total number of seats acquired by the LPC and NDP on election night. If their combined total is greater than the CPC then I believe you are correct . That is,it will be a very rocky year ahead with Harper’s government likely falling at the first confidence vote. If, on the other hand, their combined total is less than the CPC, then most Candians would not tolerate a LPC/NDP coalition that required Bloc support to survive. It would lead to a Conservative majority at the next election. Hmmmmm, it may not be so bad after all. Give them enough rope…..

Won’t happen. Bloc has a pretty hard right wing that doesn’t like leftists. They also don’t like federalist and they don’t like Dion. Expect a mass defection from Blue Bloc MPs to the Tories. I think Liberal MPs from rural ridings would get quite the ear full from their constitutients.
