Scandals and Animals
The City of Ottawa can no longer afford to take care of their 13 Royal Swans. In a report released tomorrow, staff writes:
Staff say Ottawa can’t afford to build a winter home for the Royal Swans, with the cheapest proposal at $239-thousand.
$239,000? For a swan-coop? No wonder this city can’t balance its books.

And in other sad news, Wendell the Wallabi was found dead just 15 kilometers from the farm where he escaped a few weeks ago after a storm knocked down the fence that kept him on the property. I had known Wendell since he was a wee little baby. He was always sleeping in a sling behind the cash register of a nursery we used to go to.

Did this story not happen last year, what did they do last winter. There are hundreds of farms around Ottawa ,anyone of them that could house the swans for lest than 2 grand for 6 months.
Bedding….$500.oo
Feed…..grain plus treats …$600.00
Heat lamps… $100.00
labour… Farmers do not get paid for labour
Misc…400.oo
I raise ducks and can do it for much less, just upped the estimate for larger birds.
Give them a tax break ,done deal oh but that does not help the unions does it, silly me.
Sad bout Wendell.

It seems they spent the past winter in their regular “Swantanamo Bay”… the totally inadequate “shelter” on Leitrim road.

Listen, if those Swans can’t get jobs and provide for themselves, they can always move in to public housing. Move them into Heatherington/Albion… they’ll be happy to move home after a week there.
anything over 10k is completely ridiculous to pay for these swans. Of course, they could easily raise some funds with a swan cook-off

Yes, and the spent all of the previous summer cooped up in their compound. The bright lights at city hall were terrified they would catch bird ‘flu.

Free the swans! Put them on ebay!

Building the swan quarters would be a wonderful program for the vocational-technical crowd at high school. Find an appropriate school, let them design same (with some input from poultry farmers), and let them build it. Good experience for the kids, and affordable accommodation for the swans.
